An 8 year old boy must return his friend's notebook he took by mistake, lest his friend be punished by expulsion from school.

De to erfarne karriereofficerer, uden så meget gang i karrieren, Buddusky (Nicholson) og Mulhall (Otis Young), får til opgave at føre en ung sømand, Meadows (Randy Quaid), fra flådebasen i Virginia til et fængsel i New Hampshire, hvor han skal tilbringe otte år for en mindre forseelse. Buddusky og Mulhall begynder at synes helt godt om Meadows og beslutter sig for at give ham nogle uforglemmelige oplevelser på deres rejse mod nord. Deres udskejelser begynder i Washington, hvor de lige nøjagtig undgår et enormt barslagsmål, hvorefter de drikker deres hjerner ud på hotellet. I New York kommer de i klammeri med nogle soldater, og i Boston tager Buddusky Meadows med på et bordel, så han kan blive en rigtig mand. Til sidst skal Buddusky og Mulhall, meget mod deres vilje, aflevere Meadows, og da indser de, at de er ligeså meget fanger i deres verden, som Meadows er i sin.
