Superskurken Fantômas er tilbage, og denne gang vil han ikke nøjes med mindre end verdensherredømmet. I et tog til Rom har reporteren Fandor maskeret sig som professoren - og på den måde håber kommissær Juve at kunne lokke forbryderen frem. Men Fantômas lader sig ikke narre, og det bliver et nervepirrende eventyr med storslået finale i bunden af en særdeles aktiv vulkan.

Politistyrken i Saint Tropèz er blevet udvalgt til at repræsentere Frankrig ved en international politi-kongres i New York. Cruchot's datter vil også gerne med til New York, men Far siger "Nej!". Hun sniger sig dog alligevel med som blind passagér på skibet, der skal sejle Saint Tropèz' stolte gendarm-korps til USA. Og naturligvis sker det et par gang under opholdet i New York at Cruchot "ser syner" (datteren), og nær er ved at blive erklæret utilregnelig af sin chef.

Midt i Paris nødlander et engelsk bombefly, skudt ned af tyskerne, men besætningen undslipper i faldskærme, og i løbet af kort tid får de hjælp af franske borgere, som flygter sammen med dem tværs gennem landet, i retning mod den frie zone.

This film originated as a play in Paris. The story focuses on the one-day adventures of Bertrand Barnier played with a genius of French cinema, Louis de Funes. In the same morning he learns that his daughter is pregnant, an employee stole a large amount of money from his company, his maid is about to resign in order to marry a wealthy neighbor and his body builder is interested in marrying his daughter. The seemingly complicated story-line is full of comedy or errors and some of the most hilarious mime scenes of the French cinema.
