Omkring årsskiftet 1999/2000 gennemførte Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, Kristian Levring, Thomas Vinterberg og Lars von Trier et eksperiment med en hidtil uset form for interaktivt tv: Fra et kontrolrum styrede de fire Dogme 95 brødre via monitorer og radiotransmission fire hold skuespillere igennem et fælles drama, der udfoldede sig nytårsaften i 'real time' og med det festklædte og fyrværkerioplyste København som levende kulisse. Dagen efter, 1. januar 2000, blev de uredigerede forløb udsendt parallelt på landets fire største tv-kanaler, således at seerne med fjernbetjeneren i hånden selv kunne zappe sig frem til deres egne individuelle klipninger af materialet. Nærværende film er instruktørkollektivets eget bud på en version af historien, der udfolder sig i et spændingsfelt mellem kontrol og kaos.

Ruth Butler, a clerk in an emporium, marries Jimmy Rutledge and thereby greatly displeases his mother, the owner of the emporium, because of Ruth's lowly origins. Ma Galestrum (Connie Gilchrist) is a boardinghouse owner whose tenants are a group of aspiring boxers.
