Ilden bredte sig imens brandfolkene forsøgte at nå frem, men vejarbejde, trafikpropper og den stigende panik blandt de mange mennesker på gaderne i den milde aften førte til, at ilden fik bedre fat. Det blev starten på en lang række fejltagelser, misforståelser og uheld, der ledte til, at katedralen kun med held, overmenneskeligt mod og enestående selvopofrelse undgik, at tårnene og de uvurderlige genstande blev flammernes bytte og katedralen totalt og aldeles udslettet.
